How does it work?
Your image is drawn onto an HTML Canvas element in the browser, then re-encoded at the quality level you choose. The Canvas API supports JPEG, PNG, and WebP output natively. The process runs entirely on your device — no file is sent to any server.
What quality setting should I use?
For web images, 75–85% is the standard range — visually near-identical to the original at roughly half the file size. Email attachments work well at 60–70%. For WhatsApp and social media, 50–60% is usually fine since those platforms compress again anyway. Max (90%) is for cases where you need to reduce size without any visible quality loss.
Why doesn't the slider affect PNG files?
PNG is a lossless format — it doesn't support quality reduction. The only way to meaningfully compress a PNG is to convert it to JPEG or WebP using the format selector. Be aware that JPEG doesn't support transparency: if your PNG has a transparent background it will become white.
JPEG vs WebP — which should I choose?
WebP produces smaller files than JPEG at the same visual quality and is supported by all modern browsers. Use WebP for web publishing. Use JPEG when sending to someone who might open the file in older software or on a system that doesn't support WebP.
